MOTCE Supports Majalaya 2 Sarong Festival to Revive Majalaya’s Creative Economy in West Java

Reviving the economy and creating employment opportunities

Majalaya, March 15th 2023 - Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy/Tourism and Creative Economy Agency supports the Majalaya 2 Sarong Festival to revive the creative economy sector in Majalaya, Bandung Regency, West Java, especially in the fashion sub-sector.

Director for National and International Events of the MOTCE, Dessy Ruhati, when attending the Majalaya 2 Sarong Festival at the Ats-Tsaqofah Al-Islamiyah Majalaya Islamic Boarding House, Wednesday (15/3/2023), said that Majalaya has tremendous potential in the fashion sub-sector, especially woven sarong made of Majalaya. According to her, this festival is suitable to become a national-scale national event.

“The MOTCE supports this event because sarongs, as one of the creative economy products, can be promoted not only to increase the community’s economy but also to maintain cultural traditions. Sarong has become a hereditary tradition. Even in Majalaya, the sarong has been a part of the people’s life since the 17th century,” according to Dessy.

Therefore, she revealed that the MOTCE supported the development of this festival, especially in promoting the environmental sustainability aspect of the sarongs production, so that its potential can support sustainable tourism. Dessy expected that Majalaya could become part of the tourism villages in Indonesia to be developed as part of the textile thematic travel pattern.

“We expect that later, these ancient motifs can be re-developed. One of the ways is by collaborating with the communities to organize a competition to revive them and prioritize the natural coloring process,” she added.

On the same occasion, the Vice Regent of Bandung, Sahrul Gunawan, appreciated the support of the MOTCE to revive the ecosystem of the fashion sub-sector in Majalaya. “We welcome the central government’s support, in this case, is the MOTCE, to revive Majalaya,” Sahrul said.

During this festival, there were also a talk show and an MSME bazaar on March 14-17, 2023. Also present at this event was the Director for Trade Business Development of the Ministry of Trade, Septo Soepriyatno.
